5Cats Tamar-kali was off my radar screen for the past ten years but I suppose now it's for the best that I discovered her now. I've listened to the whole album once a day since downloading and it breaks my mind into different pieces every time. I hear PJ Harvey's odd meter grooves that truly groove, Sabbath-esque riffs that Tony Iommi would be proud to call his own, wails that recall Ian Gillan's Jesus Christ Superstar, social commentary that carries Gil-Scott Heron's legacy with Fishbone flair. Favorite track: pearl (psychochamber version).

McNegus One of my top 5 records since it came out in 2010... Enough said. Fierce, political metal from a powerful Afrikan womxn... Familiar, yet like nothing you've heard before. Soulful and devastating, and always beautiful... Favorite track: maimed.

about

Tamar-kali travels a lonely road of independence that finds many artists of her caliber overworked and underappreciated. Her album title is no mere piece of alliteration, but a reflection of where she found herself after a particularly disheartening period.
The cathartic, orgasmic emotion Tamar-kali brings with every song leaves her peerless above or underground.
As she says in the pulsating "Warrior Bones," "These warrior bones ache for revolution/but the people ain't ready." How can anyone be ready for the aural assault Tamar-kali brings? For warriors and lovers alike, the thrill of the unexpected makes her music all the more necessary.
